SILVERTOOTH ft DANNY RED – JUST CHECK IT (STM002)

For the 2nd release on his new label, Silvertooth draws inspiration from one of his main influences, electronic dance pioneers whose seminal debut record is deemed an all time classic.

“Leftfield’s ‘Leftism’ is the blueprint for modern electronic dance music. It’s 30 years old, it sounded like the future in 1994 and it still does. There have been many forward thinking, pioneering dance records over the years, from all genres, but for me Leftism was ahead of its time and a game changer. It has it all, ambient & dub, hip hop & electro beats, tribal infused euphoric progressive house & pounding techno, they absolutely nailed this record. I recall an interview I read a long time ago, pretty sure it was in Mixmag or DJ mag, and I’m also fairly sure it was with Sasha. The question was asked “how would you describe dance music to an alien?” To which he simply replied – “I’d play Leftism”.

For this release, Silvertooth is very pleased to have collaborated with none other than dub/reggae legend Danny Red from Kingston, Jamaica. A name you may or may not be familiar with, but whose voice you will certainly recognize, as Danny’s voice is responsible for “Inspection (Check One)” as featured on the above album Leftism.

The Silvertooth mixes deliver the bass in truckloads on this record, a skanking dub-tinged slo-mo groove over a thumping kick drum, rattling timbale drum fills and a pulsating gnarly lead synthesizer which elevates the chorus, and then comes the hammond piano solo. Danny’s vocal rides the dub rhythm perfectly and delivers the message in his own unique style.

The package has Original & Extended vocal mixes, plus Silvertooth’s Dancehall Dub which strips out the verses and loops up some vocal hooks with added FX and an increased tempo. The remix comes from TJ Hookers who have recently signed an EP to the label for release later this year. Their remix ups the pace even more to a mid-tempo almost hip-house roller, opening the track up to a wider audience … .so JUST CHECK IT.

SILVERTOOTH – SHUT UM DOWN (STM001)

Silvertooth launches the label with a cover of a late 70s Gil Scot Heron record that, like many GSH songs, comes with a powerful message that needs to be heard to this day.

“I heard the GSH original on the Lauren Laverne show on 6 Music. I knew the song as I’ve got the “Messages” album he made with Brian Jackson. I heard it again on the Steve Lamcq show the day after. It made me think those lyrics are still so poignant and can be construed many ways in this crazy world we live in. It’s also a super cool track with a fabulous loose groove and uplifting bluesy piano hook – I thought it would make absolutely killer low slung deep electronic roller with a 303 bass”

We wanted to find vocalists to stay true to the original version and that is certainly the outcome with the soulful male lead by Ashley Slater (Freak Power) and female gospel BVs by Jane Reeves. The Silvertooth original mix is a bluesy, psychedelic, balearic, slo-mo-acid-house (but not house) version aimed straight at radio.

The Silvertooth dubs were made specifically for the A Love From Outer Space dancefloor, as a sort of homage to the late great Andrew Weatherall (The Guv’nor), Stewart being a regular at ALFOS since it started back in 2010. Sean Johnson gave the vocal dub its 1st play at ALFOS in Feb, and recently commented “it’s been one of my biggest tracks of the year”.

Further mixes come from Pop Up 2 Get Down who take the tune into beautifully blissed out philly-disco vibes (support from Francois Kevorkian), Chewy Rubs who pumps up the piano hook into a jackin’ Chicago house stomp, and deep-tech wizards and Sasha collaborators Sentre, who have stripped it right down and dubbed it out into a techy prog workout (with Sasha & Digweed supporting recently).
